"A Great Sauterne" A couple of years ago I did a major painting and subsequent limited edition and Giclée print called “Simple Tastes.” It was a painting of twenty wine labels representing many of the greatest wines in the world, along with several antique corkscrews. The print was quite popular among wine lovers, many of whom suggested that I should do some follow-up pieces to go with it. So here is the first of at least a pair and maybe a series. ‘Chateau d’Yquem,’ located in the Sauternes
region of Bordeaux, is one of the finest and most unique estates in
France, classified ”Premier Cru Supérieur” in 1855. A bottle of 1921
‘Chateau d’Yquem’ is considered to be one of the greatest and rarest wines
in existence. Some of the world’s most renowned wine experts tasted the
1921 recently, and still, after 80 years, rated it one of the greatest
wines ever made. I, of course, do not and did not have that bottle. A
friend who collects great wines and labels lent me the label, but the
corkscrew is from my collection. The background is part of an antique
French cabinet from the 1800’s. Given a choice, I would take the cabinet
and a cheaper bottle of wine. I could use the cabinet more than once.
