"Wigeon"

This Wigeon and the others offered here are all from my own designs, with a nod toward “Shang” Wheeler’s painting style.  His technique of painting the heads with a dark color, letting it dry and then painting on a thick layer of white oil, and then scratching a feather pattern into it with a stick creates a great effect.  I use the same technique for my Black Ducks, but it works especially well with Wigeon because the tops of their heads are sometimes nearly snow white.

Wigeon are fun to watch among a group of ducks on the water. They will often wait until another duck (usually a diver) brings some grass or aquatic plant to the surface, at which time the sneaky Wigeon will dart in and steal the morsel. Like most ducks, they like their “space,” and can be very aggressive in defending it.  I tried to capture the essence of the Wigeon personality in this decoy, telling the other ducks to get out of his space. He has been well-used in my hunting rig and surprisingly his open bill has never been broken.  He has a solid body made of juniper and is very light. He is rigged and ready to hunt or sit on your mantel. He has “Joe Seme” branded on the bottom.
