Chincoteague Decoys and Sketches

This is the first “set” of limited edition miniature decoys that I created. The four decoys pictured here are miniature replicas of actual working decoys from my collection that were made by Ira Hudson (1876-1949), the master boat builder and decoy maker from Chincoteague, Virginia. The set includes a Canvasback, Pintail, Merganser, and a Bluebill (or Scaup).

In creating the four decoys in this set, I employed several of Ira Hudson’s techniques,  such as carving  fluted tails, scratching feathers into the pintail while the paint was wet, swirling areas of paint in the Can & Bluebill, etc. All four have tacks for eyes, as almost all Hudson working decoys do.   Along with the miniatures, there are four individual sketches giving the ‘histories’ of each decoy. Each decoy is between four and five inches in length.  There are about six of these sets still available.
